CHECKLIST FOR A SUCCESFUL MOVE

We have put together a checklist based on our many years of experience with thousands of relocations in order to ensure a trouble-free move.

8 weeks before the move

• If your employer is reimbursing your relocation expenses, find out what exactly will be reimbursed.
• Some relocation expenses are tax-deductible. Check with your employer or accountant.
• Start making a list of all of your belongings, indicating what can be sold or given away.

5-6 weeks before the move

• Check to make sure your passport is still valid and will remain valid for another 12 months.
• Check whether any permits are required for, for example, residency, employment, vehicles or firearms.
• Are you moving to a country that requires vaccinations?
• Locate all of your personal documents, such as passports, driving licenses, marriage and/or birth certificates, medical/school records and make copies of them.
• Inform your bank, doctor, dentist, insurance company, lawyer, etc. of your move.
• Cancel all subscriptions to clubs, magazines, newspapers, etc.
• Inform your children’s school(s) of your move.
• Find all receipts for recent purchases.
• Clean up your basement, attic or storage room.
• If part of your belongings need to be stored, arrange that now – we can assist you!

3-4 weeks before the move

• Discuss your insurance needs with an Interdean relocation consultant and fill out all forms.
• Confirm your move with your Interdean relocation consultant.
• Clean all gardening tools, bicycles and other outdoor equipment (depending on your destination).
• Arrange for someone to watch your children and pets on move day.
• Cancel all rental agreements.
• Finish up all food and drinks.
• Empty all fuel tanks of lawnmowers, engines and other power-driven equipment.
• Decide whether or not you are taking your plants (depends on the destination).

1-7 days before the move

• Separate all personal documents and items into those that should be packed and those that should not, such as passports, driving licences, tickets, marriage and birth certificates, clothing, etc.
• Clean all electrical appliances that will be moving with you.
• Arrange with your neighbours to have sufficient parking space available in front of the residence for the moving van.
• Separate all goods that will be moved as air freight from goods that will be moved as seaborne freight.

2-3 days before the move

• Defrost your refrigerator and freezer.
• Pack a box of those items you will need first in your new home and make sure it is loaded onto the moving van last.
• Contact Interdean to find out what time the moving van will arrive.

ON THE DAY OF THE MOVE

• Relax and let Interdean do the work!
• Stay close at hand in case the movers have any questions.
• Check all rooms and built-in closets to make sure nothing has been left behind.
• Take metre readings for gas, water and electricity.
• Do not forget to sign the work receipt and inventory list.
